Q. $99 gets you a home security system? Really? And a Free Keypad?! Where do I sign up?
A. What the national ads don’t tell you is that you are locked into a 3-5 year contract at $30-$40 a month for a basic system (3 doors, 1 motion sensor) Although some of the details may vary, the basic system doesn’t really provide the envelope of protection the TV and print ad images show. But now you are locked in and have to pay premium rates for additions to the system. Forgot some basics in adding a user, or setting the system for a vacation? Good luck getting support or a service tech. Again, only at a premium.
Q. TV shows portray detectives zooming into a wide-screen shot and picking off license plates. Why can’t I do that with my system?
A. With the right equipment, you can. The critical step is understanding what you need to capture and matching the right equipment to do so. A standard, 3-12mm CCTV camera lens will not capture a large scene and still be able to zoom in and get the license plate. This requires a dedicated camera, zoomed in only for license plates, a pan/tilt/zoom camera that can be manually zoomed in, or a Megapixel camera with the right recorder behind it.
Q. My cameras show a nice clear picture live, but when I look at recorded images, they are small, or distorted. What can I do?
A. Chances are, your recorder is not set to full resolution and frame rate. Many companies try to sell a system that will record for 30 days, on a small hard drive. In order to accomplish this, the installers set the recorder to record only a few frames per second and limit the size of the file being recorded to save storage space. These settings should be understood at the time of installation to avoid surprises later.
Q. We have a new camera system and were shown how to operate it but that was months ago. Now we are trying to retrieve recorded data and can’t remember how. I called the installer but they want to charge us to send a technician out.
A. We provide over the phone and On-Site technical support for our clients for at least one year after all installations, AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.
Q. I am paying high monthly charges for my alarm system. We have had the system for years and have had little trouble, but the costs keep going up. What can I do?
A. In most cases, we can take over existing alarm systems, provided you are no longer under contract with your current provider. YOU HAVE OPTIONS. Be aware: many companies will add to the life of the contract when they conduct service calls or updates. Be aware of the fine print on service tickets. You may become trapped.
